Credo che i migliori siano il primo e il secondo uff, vorrei non averli mai giocati... ahh, che bei tempi erano quelli!! Assieme a Broken Sword è l'avventura grafica più bella di tutti i tempi!

Riguardo ad MI5 ho trovato tempo fa quanto segue:

There's no reason why we can't adapt those to another generation of games players. I think there are stories that still remain to be told within Monkey Island and Grim Fandango.

The name "Monkey Island 5" has mysteriously appeared on a few release schedules though, but no big fuss came of that. Most likely it were errors by whoever makes those lists. n 2002 both The International House of Mojo and The World of Monkey Island pulled off an April fools joke that made a lot of people think Monkey Island 5 was in production. We revealed the title and an early draft of the box art, both were fake of course."

Di MI 5, effettivamente, non si parla quasi per niente; è però in fase avanzata di sviluppo una nuova avventura grafica di Ron Gilbert, vero padre spirituale di MI, che a quanto pare avrà per protagonista una vampira e per tema l'Horror in generalea; naturalmente il tutto in chiave comico-demensiale.
Il titolo del gioco proprio non mi viene, ma la data d'uscita dovrebbe essere prossima...

Bè interessante comunque anche se non credo prenderà mai il posto di MI...

(rimanendo in tema di avventure devo provare Grim Fandango XD... nel MI3 quando va nella locanda e c'è lo scheletro fa "ma perchè tutti mi chiedono di Grim Fandango uffa?!" XDXDXD)

Notevole Grim: un'avventura a cui certamente il 3D ha fatto molto bene.
Cmq la saga di MI ha cominciato a perdere colpi proprio quando Gilbert ha lasciato la Lucas (cioè dopo il secondo MI). Un suo nuovo lavoro non può che destare l'interesse degli appassionati di avventure grafiche...

mh devo essere sincero, i primi MI nn li ho provati (ho il primo ma è troppo incasinato per i miei gusti )... però insomma, non si sa mai che sia un piccolo capolavoro questo suo nuovo lavoro...

Molti considerano MI 2 la migliore avventura grafica di sempre. Io posso dire semplicemente che è la migliore avventura grafica a cui abbia giocato: grafica fantastica (per l'epoca), enigmi complessi ma mai illogici, trama impeccabile e dialoghi da spaccarsi in 2 dalle risate: davvero unico.

Freeware non credo. Certamente lo si trova nei siti abandonware, ma la cosa, come sai, non è pienamente legale.
Lungo cmq lo è MI 2. Ci ho giocato troppo tempo fa per fare paragoni, ma ricordo distintamente che mi ha tenuto impegnato per un bel po'.
